The dominant view of the US-led coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS), [Operation Inherent Resolve](http://www.centcom.mil/MEDIA/NEWS-ARTICLES/News-Article-View/Article/884877/iraq-and-syria-operations-against-isil-designated-as-operation-inherent-resolve/), is that its fundamental goal is the defeat of ISIS.
